Uncommon causes of thyrotoxicosis.

چکیده
Apart from the common causes of thyrotoxicosis, such as Graves' disease and functioning nodular goiters, there are more than 20 less common causes of elevated free thyroid hormones that produce the symptoms and signs of thyrotoxicosis. This review describes these rarer conditions and includes 14 illustrative patients. Thyrotropin and free thyroxine should be measured and, when the latter is normal, the free triiodothyronine level should be obtained. Measurement of the uptake of (123)I is recommended for most patients.

Silent thyroiditis in uncommon setting.
The most common causes of thyrotoxicosis in Japan are silent thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. For patients with thyrotoxicosis present in early pregnancy, both gestational thyrotoxicosis and undiagnosed Graves’ disease must be considered. Silent thyroiditis is a rare condition during pregnancy. Postpartum thyroiditis is a variant of silent thyroiditis that occurs in the postpartum period, a few...
متن کاملCongestive Heart Failure Complicated with Chylothorax as the Manifestation in A Patient with Thyrotoxicosis: A Case Report
Although thyrotoxicosis is not rare, congestive heart failure as the manifestation of thyrotoxicosis is relatively uncommon. Coexistence of congestive heart failure and chylothorax is even rarer in hyperthyroid patients. A 37-year-old male patient had been well until 3 years ago when tachycardia and body weight loss developed and a diagnosis of Graves’ disease was made. Due to an improvement in...
متن کاملUnusual Presentation of Uncommon Disease: Anorexia Nervosa Presenting as Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome—A Case Report from Southeast Asia
Anorexia nervosa presenting as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is rare. The causes of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome are multiple like alcohol abuse, thyrotoxicosis, haemodialysis, severe malnutrition because of gastric carcinoma and pyloric obstruction, hyperemesis gravidarum, and prolonged parenteral feeding. We report a case of anorexia nervosa, who presented with Wernicke's encephalopathy and prog...
متن کاملAn uncommon endocrine cause of pyrexia of unknown origin.
We report a previously healthy 43 yr old male who presented with prolonged fever, weight loss and neck pain for 3 weeks. Even after extensive work up for the possible causes of pyrexia, the cause remained elusive. In view of persistent tachycardia and neck pain, possibility of subacute thyroiditis was suspected. Thyroid function test (TFT) revealed thyrotoxicosis, which on further evaluation wa...
متن کاملAmiodarone and the thyroid: a practical guide to the management of thyroid dysfunction induced by amiodarone therapy.
Amiodarone induces predictable changes in thyroid function tests that are largely explicable in terms of the physiological effects of iodide excess and inhibition of deiodinase activity. Clinically relevant thyroid dysfunction is not uncommon during amiodarone therapy, and requires careful diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis and management of thyrotoxicosis is probably best supervised by a s...
